Sažetak
Nowadays, many scholars empphasize continuum in the developmental sequences: communication-speech and language-reading-academic success. Any part of the continuum effects on the outcome of the next: weak communication skills-speech and language problems-inappropriate prereading skills-reading problems. Purpose of this work is to describe communicative and language development of a boy with SLI. The features of early phase of SLI are generally not well investigated, as well as in Croatian. There is a deficiency of information about prereading skills. Development of language and prereading skills will be discussed in the relation of efficiency of language therapy. The boy came to assessment in the age of 2.8. Parents main concern was the fact that their child does not communicate as his peers. Language therapy started at the age of 3 ; 8. Sessions were videotaped 1x a month and transcribed. Language and reading abilities were assessed in the school period. Initial assessment pointed to immature joint attention skills and simple communicative forms. Cognitive abilities showed a discrepancy between verbal and nonverbal domain. Further language development was slow, in all segments. The case study showed an importance of: (1) early recognition of problems, (2) recognition of critical phases to train language, (3) parents role and necessarity of maintaining the pattern learned in speech and language therapy, (4) the beginning of formal instruction which essentially changes observed parameters and relations.
