Sažetak
Obesity is a metabolic disorder characterized by an increase of body fat and it is important as a risk factor rather than the degree of excess weight. It can be assessed in several ways and the most common estimation tools have been body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage (BF %). The aim of this study was to estimate weight status of student population in Croatia based on BMI and BF% and to compare the results in weight status classification. 222 university students participated in the study, 63.8 % female and 36.2 % male, mean age of 19.5. According to the results students were classified based on WHO criteria. BMI range for females was 16.3 - 45.8 and 17.9 – 38.1 for male, while BF % showed range of 9.9 – 47.6 % for females and 5.7 – 35.2 % for male. Results according BF % criteria show that 54.4% female students, of 73.1% which were classified like normal weight by BMI, are overweight and obese and 1% female students were underweight. Within male students group, 75.0% of them were classified as normal weight according to BMI, while 33.3 % of them are overweight and obese and 1.7 % are underweight according to BF % criteria. In conclusion, the results indicate large differences in BMI and BF % measurements as criteria for the weight status classification, especially in the females.
