Sažetak
The collapse of former Yugoslavia in the early 1990s precipitated the worst armed conflict in Europe since 1945. For several million people the conflict was associated with various extremely stressful and potentially traumatic experiences. In most people affected by psychologically traumatic events, adverse psychiatric symptoms improve with and without specific treatment. However, and particularly after exposure to repeated and on-going stressful events such as in civil war, a significant number of people develop prolonged symptoms that can last up to decades. The CONNECT project aims to investigate long-term clinical and social outcomes of people with war experience in countries of former Yugoslavia and in refugees in Western Europe and aims to identify the impact of social and health care interventions on these outcomes. It will bring together a critical mass of leading researchers utilising complementary expertise from member states and Balkan countries. The findings will provide empirical evidence to design effective health and social care policies for people with posttraumatic stress, including the particularly challenging group with persistent symptoms.
