Sažetak
The development of sport towards professionalization and commercialisation resulted in discussions on managing sport organizations. The aim of this paper was to draw attention to relevance, as well as the necessity, of applying the process of management in sport organizations. Who are the persons responsible for conducting this process, by which activities, what are the necessary knowledge and skills for managing sport organizations, are some other basic questions that are discussed in this paper. There are several approaches to defining sport managers and their activities – through basic managerial functions and management roles. Their required competencies are determined primarily by the centre of activities, secondarily by the type and thirdly by the size of the organization. In general, it is possible to conclude that the specifics of sport managers is that besides needing to posses knowledge necessary for conducting of all managerial functions, they need to be familiar with the characteristics of the sport they manage. The research on sport managers needed knowledge and skills emphasized the importance of sports-specific knowledge area, and it can be concluded that, despite the choice of activities which are based on basic managerial functions, the perception of sport managers in Croatia still matches that of trainer-manager.
