The term alcoholic addiction assumes the excessive consumption of alcoholic drinks, regardless of the consequences of the abuse. Motivation is a state creating the tendency which a person towards a specific gola of action. It results from the state if deprivation and from the system of values and leads towards homeostasis. It can also be understood asa way fulfilling various needs, ranging from biological to social. The aim of this study was to define the motivation factors for the treatment of alcohol addiction. We have analyzed the data gathered from 30 patients, who had been treated at the Department for Social Psychiatry during two months and who met the DSM-IV criteria for alcohol addiction. We have also used the self-evaluation questionnaire and the structured interview about motivation. In the control group, we have included 30 persons who met the DSM-IV criteria for alcohol adiction, but refused and treatment. As known from the literature, the patients who recognioze the risk for their professional, family and social life in their drinking habit are better motivated for the treatment.
