Sažetak
Though aerial photographs are mainly used in the exploration of sites on land, they can also help in locating some underwater archaeological sites. Owing to the good transparency of the Adriatic Sea, aerial photographs can provide important information about different archaeological sites along the eastern Adriatic coast. Working in a project named ‘ Underwater archaeological explorations of the Liburnian and ancient ports in the central Adriatic’ managed by Prof. dr. sc. Zdenko Brusić from the Department of Archaeology of the University of Zadar, the explorers use aerial photographs to locate and protect potential underwater archaeological sites, mainly ancient breakwaters, piers, salt pans, fish-ponds and architecture remains. Many ancient under-sea sites near the island of Pašman have been discovered recently from aerial photographs. The island of Pašman has previously been almost a blank spot on the archaeological map of this area. Aerial photographs also offered some valuable information about an under-sea prehistoric site near the village of Turanj, as well as about a complex under-sea site from the Roman Imperial period near Pakoštane, a site near Biograd where systematic underwater archaeological explorations have already started.
