Sažetak
Culture is the manifestation of diversity among the countries that compose the international community. It constrains people by imposing on them a structure and principles of selection and liberates them from anonymity and oblivion. Different cultures are recognized through their material productions over time – their monuments, works of art, technological achievements and popular culture. This material culture is reproduced and preserved through institutional mechanisms. In order to share our knowledge, beliefs, views and values with others we have to understand and appreciate other cultures and their heritage. Heritage is defined as “ what we value” or “ what we wish to pass on to future generations” . It connects the living communities with the sedimented memories of previous generations who have experienced or heard about them and passed them on either by word of mouth or in writing from one generation to the next. Social values, oral traditions, knowledge systems, know-how, aesthetic and spiritual beliefs, artistic expressions and languages have been defined as intangible heritage. Fear of the effect of globalization has increased an interest and concern for intangible heritage. Language diversity is fundamental to the cultural heritage. Language loss deprives communities of their unique cultural, historical and ecological knowledge and identity. Thus, the responsibility of ensuring that no languages will disappear and that as many languages as possible will be safeguarded and transmitted to the future generations lies on linguists, language activists, language teachers, local communities, policy and law makers as well as on all of us.
