Sažetak
Malnutrition is a common complication among chronic hemodialysis patients. One of the most important biochemical markers of malnutrition is serum albumin. One of the causes for diminished albumin synthesis is reduced intake of protein by diet. The aim of this study was to examine whether the seasonal diet variations have a greater influence on concentration of serum albumin and cholesterol in patients on hemodialysis. We have analyzed, during winter and summer, values of serum cholesterol and albumin in 25 stable hemodialysis patients without inflammation (10 female, 15 male). Mean age was 58.2± ; ; 4.2 years. They were on hemodialysis for 55± ; ; 37.4 months. All patients received regular hemodialysis for 4 h, three times per week. Polysulphone membranes were used in all patients. Mean body mass index (BMI) in January was 25.4± ; ; 4.6 kg/m2, and July 25.5± ; ; 4.6 kg/m2 (NS). Mean level of C-reactive protein (CRP) ) in January was 4.8± ; ; 3.2 mg/L, in July 4.4± ; ; 2.3 mg/L (NS). Mean serum albumin concentration in January was 47.2± ; ; 2.9 g/L , while in July 40.5± ; ; 2.8 g/L (P<0.05) and mean cholesterol concentration was 5.6± ; ; 0.9 and 4.8± ; ; 0.8 (P<0.01).In can be concluded that during summer, serum albumin concentration is significantly lower. CRP and BMI value have not been significantly changed. Above mentioned decrease in albumin and cholesterol concentration results from lower protein and fat intake in summer while obviously high calorie food intake remained similar. Changes in nutrition in summer can have a significant impact on serum albumin and cholesterol concentration in patients on hemodialysis.
