Sažetak
This paper summarises various condition monitoring techniques that are appropriate to applied in monitoring bearings with only aim to prevent unplanned breakdowns in industry. Rolling element surfaces fall by fatigue under Hertzian stresses which cause pitting locally. Pitting extends, accompained by damage caused by the loose particles. More occasionally bearings overheat due to bad fittings or over greasing. This can result in elements welding together and breaking apart. The cages also fail under fatigue usually due to poor fitting or use of an incorrect bearing. The deterioration of a bearing is greatly affected by the amount of direct surface contact. Wear rate in a dry bearing is very high. A lubricant is used to act as a cushion between the surfaces under load with relative movement. Ideally the lubricant film thickness is several times greater than the roughness of the surface in contact and is sufficient to keep the surfaces totally separated. Race or roller failure then only occurs due to fatigue in the loaded surface and very long lives are experienced. In common practice, however, the lubricant is unable to keep the surfaces apart because of the load, speed and bearing size combination or through problems of ensuring fully flooded lubrication. This is particular problem with grease lubrication. Under boundary lubrication conditions where there is localised metal to metal contact, wear takes place, generating debris and accelerating fatigue failure at the surfaces. To meet the requirements for monitoring, a confusion of techniques have envolved for monitoring bearing condition. No technique will work in all situations, nor will a technique be totally successful in any specific situation in diferent industries. This paper intents also to give a review of techniques makes the reader aware of the range of techniques available and authors conclusion in conection with technique selection.
