Sažetak
In this paper, we investigate how end-to-end application-level performance (of Electronic Financial Transaction traffic, in particular) depends on the actual protocol stacks, operating systems and network transmission rates. With this respect, we implemented the according simulation tests of performance of TCP and UDP protocols running on various operating systems, ranging from Windows, Sun Solaris, to Linux, and address differences in performance, focusing throughput and response time. It came out that, for most applications, TCP performed significantly better than UDP, whenever the (dis)connection overhead was not relatively significant, otherwise UDP exhibited performance gain, regardless of LAN transmission rate. When using faster networks (Gbps), the performance difference between the stacks was more evident and the choice of operating system came out to be more important.
