Sažetak
The unselective type of legislation for the assessment of fitness to drive in persons with epilepsy, which is still in force in Croatia, is characterized by neglecting the fact that different epileptic syndromes may have different impacts on the safety in traffic. To explore the efficiency of such a type of legislation, which is not in agreement with a trend of drawing up the selective and liberalized regulations in a number of western countries, an anonymous multicentric poll was taken in 277 persons treated for epilepsy. The results showed that 46.9% of study subjects illegally possessed driving licence, and 8.2% of the polled individuals were driving without driving licence. In contrast to the former subgroup, the drivers without driving licence predominantly drove tractors (>0.000). However, 20.1%of the subjects with a driving licence did not actually drive, and 1/3 believed they were driving more rarely than the average population. The data obtained pointed very clearly to the inefficiency of the unselective type of legislation and may be interpreted as one of the arguments in favour of the view that the unselective regulations should be liberalized according to the principle of the selective approach to epilepsy and epileptic syndromes.
