Sažetak
Studies made for various types of biomass in Croatia estimate its potential on 50 PJ , which could cover 10% of energy usage in Croatia. The main goal of this paper is to investigate the influence of EU Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) and Kyoto flexible mechanisms (Joint Implementation and Clean Development Mechanism) on biomass competitiveness for electricity production in Croatia. Broader utilization of biomass would have positive influence on other aspects of Croatian power system development, such as CO2 mitigation, self supply of energy, energy prices stability and employment (according to the studies , biomass usage could result in 5, 000 new direct working positions with total of 60, 000 indirect). The main advantage of biomass when compared with fossil fuels is that it is considered as non-emitting CO2 energy resource, which brings to its better competitiveness in case when price of emission allowances is added. Basic information on Croatian energy sector, obligations to cut CO2 emissions, role of biomass as an energy source and incentives for its use are presented in the paper.
