Sažetak
Protected areas are a vital contribution to the conservation of the world's natural and cultural resources. The paper indicate the importance of formulating and carrying out a tourism destionation strategy for sensitive tourism areas. Protected areas can provide opportunities for rational use of marginal lands, generating income and creating jobs, for research and monitoring, for conservation education, and for recreation and tourism. The article primarily aimed at demonstrating the identification, evaluation and use of indicators of sustainable tourism in the Croatian National park Brijuni. National park Brijuni is protected area with a vital contribution to the conservation of the world's natural and cultural resources. The study research the hypothesis that by managing sensitive tourism destinations with quantitative and qualitative information, sustainability in Istria can be increased. Existed WTO activities are directed to the sustainable development of island and coastal destinations. According to WTO sustainable lists author suggest a list of indicators needed to develop systems of protected areas of National park Brijuni. Concept of mass tourism has not allowed this type of environmental studies and protection. The paper concentrates on the Brijuni Rivijera project as a new document with a special accent on the protection of natural habitats, flora and fauna, but with the maintenance of environmental stability of surrounding regions. The initial results seem to confirm today's and future Croatian opennes of to the European tourism market.
