Sažetak
Overbooking has been one of the oldest and in financial terms among the most successful of revenue management practices. With the aim of achieving a balance between risk of flying with empty seats and the risk of denying access to passengers, airlines have developed sophisticated forecasting models for the prediction of passenger no-show rates and setting of overbooking levels. However, these methods are not 100% successful and there are some occasions when more passengers show up than there is available capacity, which causes inconvenience for those affected. In the European Union, compensating passengers that are denied boarding has been regulated since 1991. More recently, regulators have been reviewing and extending this legislation due to adverse effects on passenger treatment as a result of increased competition among airlines. New regulations has been adopted by the European Parliament and is entering into force in February 2005. This paper gives an overview orf the main changes in the European regulation and identifies main areas that Croatia Airlines will have to modify and redefine in order to harmonise its rules and procedures with the EU and its requirements.
