Sažetak
Once diagnosed, pancreatic cancer usually has a poor prognosis due to the frequently late diagnosis of the disease. The methods discussed in the paper show the importance of genetic biology for surgery. The detection of mutations in the form of inactivated tumor suppressor genes such as p53, p16, DPC4, BRCA2, and MKK4, found in pancreatic cancer as well as in other tumor types is of paramount importance. K-ras gene mutations have been found to occur in 90% of patients with pancreatic cancer, stimulating investigators to search for possible early detection methods. The methods of molecular biology such as karyotyping and allelotyping have confirmed duct lesions to be the precursors of infilterating adenocarcinoma of the pancreas. The development of gene-based screening tests for early detection of pancreatic neoplasm is very important. Only the detection of pancreatic cancer in its early stage will allow surgical resection to be fully effective.
