Sažetak
Candida species are frequently found in the mouth mucosa of children and adults (30-50%). They cause candidiasis particularly in immunocompromised patients (diabetes, leukaemia, malignant diseases, intoxications, HIV-positive patients). Some antiseptics decrease the number of microorganisms in the mouth mucosa and can be used in prevention of bacterial and fungal infections. The purpose of this study was to determine in vitro anti-Candida effect of benzalkonium chloride, menthol, thymol, essential oils of eucalyptus and peppermint as well as in vivo effect of pastille Septolete (Krka). In vitro antifungal activity of active compounds was tested on Candida albicans, C. tropicalis, C. pseudotropicalis, C. krusei, C. kefyr and C. glabrata by diffusion and dilution method. Benzalkonium chloride showed good antifungal activity on all tested Candida species and results of diffusion method correlated with concentrations of tested compound (MIC 3x10-2 mg/mL, C. albicans). Concentrations above 3.9 mg/mL inhibit the growth of Candida species. Tested species were also sensitive to activity of thymol (MIC 0.25-0.75 mg/mL), menthol (MIC 0.39-1.56 mg/mL), essential oil of eucalyptus (MIC 0.2-2.0 % v/v) and essential oil of peppermint (MIC 0.098-0.78 % v/v). In vivo anti-Candida effect of Septolete (Krka) was tested on 200 volunteers. The number of C. albicans in saliva was determined before and after the treatment with pastille Septolete . Antifungal activity of Septolete correlated with activity of their active compounds tested in vitro. Anti-Candida effect in the mouth mucosa was observed after 10 minutes and was remained active after 1 hour of pastille application.
