Sažetak
Standard maize breeding approaches are available in western corn rootworm maize breeding programs as: a) germplasm evaluation and screening method and b) inbred lines and testcross evaluation. Most of research focused on phenotypic traits in maize such as root damage, root size, root regrowth, plant lodging, root volume and root-pull resistance. Currently available resistance breeding strategies have been identified as one of the FP6, DIABR-ACT goals. The aim of this paper is to review results of research of Croatian hybrids and to present state of the art concerning maize breeding against WCR. Croatian maize hybrids were evaluated continuously from 2001. The hybrids’ tolerance to larval feeding was rated using root injury, regrowth and size. In an analysis of variance combined across locations, root injury didn’ t show significant differences among hybrids, but root regrowth and root size were significantly different. State-of-the-art, regarding breeding programs was established according literature survey. Major gaps in knowledge as a basis for future research resistance breeding strategy were discussed at Osijek workshop in 2007. This review comprises the most important information regarding maize resistance breeding accomplishments against western corn rootworm and emphasize challenges for the scientists in future research activities.
