Sažetak
After one century of focusing on pathology and human weaknesses psychologists are starting to take a more open perspective of positive side of human nature regarding human potentials, motives, and capacities. Positive psychology focuses on what constitutes the life that leads to the greatest sense of well-being, satisfaction and happiness. This concept of good life is closely related to the concept of human strengths. In this article two classification systems of human strengths and their applications in education and youth development are discussed – classification of talents/strengths developed by Clifton and Anderson and VIA Classification of Strengths and Virtues by Peterson and Seligman. Research revealed that individuals who focus on their weaknesses and try to remedy them are only able to reach level of average performance at best. But when they expend comparable effort to build on their talents they are able to gain far more and even achieve excellence. There is also consistent evidence that character strengths play important roles in positive youth development. Researchers have found that character relevant strengths are associated with positive outcomes such as academic achievement, leadership or helping others. These strengths are also related to reduced problem behaviors such as drug and alcohol abuse, violence, depression, and suicidal ideation.
