Sažetak
There is no doubt that books and reading can help children cope with stress and with trauma healing, as it helps them to engage imagination, to better understand themselves and others and to build capabilities for surviving disasters. In comparison with other possible disasters, a war causes environment where people try to stay human in inhumane circumstances and it lasts rather long. Also, conflict is always present, not only physical but also emotional. There are at least two opposing sides which can cause a lot of hate and very often parents, other adults and media are a model in developing negative attitudes toward others, causing intolerance, sense of hopelessness and helplessness. Children are exposed to tragedies in real life but they are also exposed to tragedies through the TV and other media. Based on the experience of the war in Croatia (1991-1995), this workshop will offer some answers and suggestions how libraries and librarians through using reading, books and various reading programmes can help children cope with situations which they cannot fully understand. Initiatives, programmes and actions of one of the public libraries of Zagreb are presented along with some other projects supported by the state, local communities, NGO's and other partners.
