Sažetak
This paper presents a review of small-scale private forest management in Croatia. Comparison has been made between state and private forest resources, and the actual position of small-scale forests and small-scale forest owners and management has been considered. Based on available data, some stand structure research has been carried out as well as sociological research of small-scale forest owners, and results of SWOT analyses have been obtained. Privately owned forests account for 461, 137 hectares or 19% of the total forest area in Croatia and 11.7% of the growing stock. However, the private ownership is highly fragmented. There are 600, 000 small scale private forest owners. In practice, with some exceptions, private forests remain essentially unmanaged. Generally, the private small-scale forest management is characterised by a high degree of fragmentation, non-existence of forest owners associations (non-existence of a unique approach to forest management), lack of forest owners “ profile” and lack of silvicultural skills and forestry tradition. A recommendation for the improvement of the current status and small-scale private forest management has been offered.
