Sažetak
The maritime villa in Verige bay on the island of Brioni, is a building complex designed for otium. Otium does not only stand for repose, peace and leisure, but also for the intellectual pleasure that appease all senses. Luxurious areas added to the residential part of the villa were designed for otium. The complex features numerous open and closed diaetae with a breathtaking view of the landscape including the coastline. These spaces were designed to create a particular impression. They also tell us about the Epicurean philosophy of life. The villa is a space designed for spiritual and physical health. It has halls, rooms for exercising, bathing and meditation. Artistic statues, painting and cultivated greenery, pools and fountains, fluidity and interwining of the open and closed spaces (architecture and nature), all create areas intented for health, beauty and longevity. The harmony of the architectural elements , as well as the airily decorated interiors, together with the gardens that surround the architecural units , all combined to intellectually stimulate the rich Roman elite. These spaces were purposely designed to provide on optimal setting for intellectual debates.
