Sažetak
Is it possible to design quality buildings that are technologically advanced and yet disconnected from the built environment habits of the final user? Heritage itself represents a synthesis of solutions to various tasks, over a long period of time, under specific circumstances (geographic, political and cultural) in a certain region. Those solutions create the identity of the region and should be evaluated and critically upgraded. The aim of this paper is to emphasize high quality and innovative use of the heritage messages in the design process, taking the Chapel on Sljeme near Zagreb as an example. Thoroughly analyzed and evaluated eight elements of the architectural design such as program, context, concept, form and space, movement, technology as well as perceptual and conceptual reading, provide more objective information in the use of the heritage messages and help in assessing the achieved architectural quality of the chapel design. This study shows that the chapel clearly reflects its purpose and stands out for its conceptual integrity. The innovative, simplified composition is created by means of traditional elements. Many memorable conceptual pictures are present. The unique harmony with the surroundings and sacral tradition is accomplished. A possible architectural conservation is to be found in the reflections of the architecture designs through the concept of a region. It is believed that the approach to design of the architecture of identity recognizes the value of the singular, listens to the heritage messages, circumscribing projects within the physical, social and cultural constraints of the particular, aiming at sustaining diversity while benefiting from universality. The Chapel on Sljeme has shown that it is possible to create high-quality architecture by critically analyzing and applying the built heritage elements.
