Sažetak
A psychosocial assistance project was started in March 1993 in the collective refugee center „ Gaza“ in the city of Karlovac. The primary goals for this project were to increase coping skills, facilitate empowerment and reduce mental health problems and social disintegration among the refugees. The expected impact of the project was the reduction of the psychological after effects of war in children and adult refugees, and increased resilience to future stresses which will inevitably occur after the refugees return to their homes. Through the development and implementation of the project, we have learned about: a. The importance of careful planning of our activities in response to the actual needs of beneficiaries ; b. The significant role of motivation regarding the clients use of project services, c the necessity of continuous evaluation, planned at the onset of project. Our successful experience of providing psychosocial assistance for over 4 years has shown the importance of being aware of the specific characteristic and specific needs of the population. The identified characteristic and assessed needs are fundamental for the development of appropriate and comprehensive continuum of activities.
