Sažetak
The paper is based on the research on the changes in the educational approach to cultural diversity in relation to the substantial social changes in nationally/ethnically and culturally plural Croatian society. In spite of substantial changes in the political and ideological framework, plurality in the education policy remains from the beginning of compulsory education till nowadays. The accent of the analysis will be put on the regulation of ethnic diversity in Croatian schools in the transitional period. Putting the results of the content analysis of the official documents (Constitutions, laws) and their organisational implementation in suitable social and historical context provides a logical bridge for making inferences. Apart from the conclusions concerning social origins of the changes in the regulation of ethnic differences in Croatian educational system, the aim of the paper is to discuss and/or to open the discussion on the following topics: Under which circumstances and in which forms did cultural plurality in education occur? Is it possible to learn from those experiences and use that knowledge in the construction of the European citizenship and social cohesion through education? What was and what will be the role of intercultural education? What would be the role and the limits of education in preparing for living together within ethnic and cultural diversities?
