Sažetak
Croatia holds a growing brown bear (estimated 600 – 1000), growing or stable wolf (estimated 170 – 210) and decreasing lynx population (estimated 40 – 60 animals), mostly sharing the same habitat. The main goal for large carnivore managers is to secure long-term stabile populations in coexistence with human activities. Additionally each species brings its own challenges: - to continue with trophy hunting of brown bears, a species protected by numerous international legislations - to maintain positive public attitudes toward growing brown bear population - to manage wolf attacks on livestock and influence on game animals - possible need for lynx augmentation - poaching of all three species… Since 2005 Croatia is implementing management plans for all three large carnivores. They have been prepared trough series of workshops with all interest groups participating, while bear one also incorporated the results of a study that assessed public and hunters attitudes. As planned’ after two years of implementation, all three Plans were revised. In 2007 workshops with all interest groups were organized, and results have been included into the second, revised editions of the management plans. Additionally a proposal for Joint Croatian – Slovenian Management Plan for the Dinaric lynx population has been prepared. Each management plan consists of two sections – 1) general one containing data about the species/population and II) guidelines for specific management and monitoring activities to be implemented. Main goals are common for all three plans: - reaching and maintaining social carrying capacity - habitat conservation - prevention and compensation of damages - continuous population monitoring and research - public education and involvement of interest groups in decision making - compliance with international laws and cooperation with neighboring countries. The Croatian Large Carnivore Committee has representatives from governmental, research, hunting and forest institutions and supervises the plans implementation. Also the Large Carnivore Intervention teams were established for field management (problem animals, unusual damage, non-hunting mortality, risk for humans… ). Basic implementation is financed from the state budget but many important activities could not be carried out without the contribution of European Commission (programs LIFE and Interreg) and numerous international NGOs (Alertis, Euronatur, NINA, BernThies Foundation).
