Sažetak
Labour markets in transition have gone through severe changes, as a result of which market clearing factors should have become more and more important. In spite of its advancement in overall transition process, labour market equilibrating mechanisms in Croatia are still not visible, as the country is characterized by highly segmented labour market with distinctive regional differences in unemployment rates and somewhat milder regional variation in wages. This paper aims to identify how the Blanchflower-Oswald wage curve concept works in a transition economy at different stages of development. More specifically, we estimate the wage curve parameters for Croatia in 1998 and 2005 by using micro-data from the Labour Force Survey. A specific issue we want to address is possible existence of, and changes in, the gender-based difference in the wage curve. The underlying assumption is that women are increasingly disadvantaged by emergence of market clearing mechanisms since they have less ability to protect themselves against the external shocks. The comparison of estimated wage curves for 1998 and 2005 will reveal changes in factors determining individual wage rates. Croatian experience will be put in the wider context of transition process, but it will also be compared with the situation in some advanced market economies that share the similar burden of high and persistent regional differences in unemployment rates.
