Sažetak
This work, based on the analysis of the literature published in Dalmatia in the first half of the 19th century (1815-1850), shows the way the Austrian authorities attempted to control the collective memory of the population inhabiting Dalmatia. Consideration is given to the memories of the long-lasting rule of the Venetian Republic, the memories of the French rule, Napoleon and the French revolution, as well as to the memories of the battles with the Ottomans. Special attention is given to the Austrian national memorial days identified in the majority of almanacs through which the authorities wished to create not only the sense of shared past, but also the sense of a common present and future. The author concludes that the objective of the authorities was not the complete collective amnesia. They purposely used both the national mythology and the collective memory of the population for their political objectives. Their aim was to maintain the stability of the religious and political order and built the new identity of the Austrian loyal citizen.
