Sažetak
Roma are a specific group of people descended from a single founding population, originating from the Indian subcontinent around 40 generations ago, which subsequently split into the subgroups we see today. The ethnonym Bayash or Boyash is used in Croatia and Hungary for the Roma ethnic group speaking a distinct archaic dialect of the Romanian language. They are also known as Banyash, Karavlasi or Romanian Gypsy in Serbia, Rudari in Bulgaria and Bã ; ; ; ; eº ; ; ; ; i in Romania. Bayash arrived to Croatia most likely in 19th century, after the abolition of slavery in Romania. Due to their common origin, different Romani groups have been shown to share unique private disease-causing mutations. One of such diseases, caused by a mutation in NDRG1 gene, is hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type Lom (HMSNL), first described among Bulgarian Roma. The present study focused on 428 Roma individuals living in two locations in Croatia: eastern Baranja region and Međimurje. PCR-based RFLP assays were used to detect the mutation. The digested products were resolved by agarose gel electrophoresis and visualized with SYBR gold staining. HMSNL carriers were found in both populations with overall frequency of 3.03%, what is in line with former studies conducted on Roma populations in other European countries.
