Sažetak
One of the most complicated problems in creating conditions for the integration of the Republic of Croatia into the European Union is the issue of regional development and corresponding harmonization with the European practice. Numerous reasons for this exist in different segments of economic and natural features in the Republic of Croatia. In the first case these segments include historical, cultural and economical characteristics, and in the second geographical, which includes the shape, size and other natural features. Both aspects have influenced the regional structure formation, as well as regional development policy in the Republic of Croatia in the last period. In the process of adaptation of its socio-economic system to the European, Republic of Croatia made a significant progress in the regionalization field by determining statistical regions in accordance with NUTS 2 criteria. Although numerous professional discussions in that field have been organized, and several alternatives recommended, the one which included possible problems in the very beginning, was chosen. That alternative will probably influence the problems in regional development planning. In this paper, analysis of the regional structure in the Republic of Croatia within the context of its adaptation to the European standards, as well as corresponding problem evaluation, will be made.
