Sažetak
Field studies on the distribution, population assessment and habitat quality of the Croatian dace (Telestes polylepis) were conducted for the purpose of drafting a conservation action plan. According to the Red List of freshwater fishes in Croatia, the Croatian dace has been categorized as critically endangered due to the constant reduction in its range and the quality of its habitat and the increasing anthropogenic impacts on the subterranean karst habitats where it resides for part of the year. Distribution data to date have been very fragmented. According to the literature, its range extends to the river courses and springs of the Velika Kapela and Mala Kapela Rivers, the Zagorska Mreznica basin, creeks around Josipdol and the Dobra River. According to the IUCN (2004), the only recently recorded habitat is the Stajnicka jaruga creek. This study surveyed all the localities listed in the literature and similar habitats in the general area. The species was recorded at five sites: Stajnicko polje, polje Lug, Jasenacko polje and at two sites in the area of the Zagorske Mreznice springs. All sites are mutually connected via subterranean water courses. At three sites, the Croatian dace was the only species found, while in the Zagorske Mreznice area, it was accompanied by the bullhead (Cottus gobio), common minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus) and chub (Squalius cephalus). In regions of the former range of the Croatian dace, we found rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and brown trout (Salmo trutta). Their presence, in this part of the study conducted to date, has excluded the presence of the Croatian dace.
