Sažetak
The origin of landscape architecture in Split can be traced back to the time when medieval town grew up within the walls of Diokletian's palace and consequently changed its appearance over time. The town was fortificated first by the Venetians in the early 15th century, then again in the 16th century and finally, as the Candian war raised an awareness of the need for a new system of fortifications, the town got five new bastions linked with earth-filled ramparts built up in the second half of the 17th century. As their strategic importance diminished, many of these fortifications were demolished. In the early 19th century, many private or public parks were laid out on the sites of the former bastions and curtain walls...
