Sažetak
Terpolymers are usually used in cases where desired material properties cannot be achieved by simple binary copolymers or homopolymer mixtures. Thus, the determination of terpolymerization kinetic parameters is very important for making terpolymers with the required physiochemical properties for a given application. Methacrylate-based terpolymers have received special attention for their use as rheology modifiers, especially for lubricating mineral oils, where they serve as viscosity index improvers and pour point depressants. The new development of methacrylic additives has been directed towards multifunctional activity and improvement of its thermal and oxidative stability, dispersancy, as well as resistance against mechanical breakdown. These were achieved by building in small amounts of a functional or stabilizing comonomer into polymeric chains during the course of synthesis. The most commonly employed functional groups are amines, alcohols or amides. In this work, terpolymerization kinetics of dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEM) and dodecyl methacrylate (DDMA) with methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene was investigated. It is expected that incorporation of just a small fraction of this particular functional monomer (DMAEM) will have a significant impact on the values of the desired terpolymer properties. Terpolymerizations were performed isothermally, in 1 moldm-3 toluene solutions, using peroxide initiator. Synthesized terpolymers were characterized with respect to composition (NMR, elemental analysis), molar mass distribution (SEC) and characteristic thermal transitions (DSC). Based on the Mayo-Lewis model for binary radical copolymerization and obtained interdependences between copolymer and monomer mixture compositions, the copolymerization reactivity ratios for binary pairs of monomers were determined by linear and nonlinear methods. The Alfrey-Goldfinger terpolymerization equation was used for the description of DMAEM/DDMA/(MMA or STY) terpolymerization kinetics. The kinetic constant values for the particular system will serve the purpose of process and product properties regulation in sophisticated systems of multicomponent copolymerizations.
