Sažetak
During winter season 2005/2006, a group of 402 hospitalized children less than 5 years of age with acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI) were tested by real time RT-PCR for human metapneumovirus (HMPV). HMPV was detected in 33 (8.2%) patients with peak incidence detected in January (18/33). Sixty four percent (21/33) of HMPV-infected patients in the present study were male. The mean age of HMPV-infected patients was 17.5 ± ; 16.8 months, with an age range of 1.5 to 58 months. The rates of HMPV infection that occurred in children under 6 and under 12 months of age was 30.3% and 57.6%, respectively. No difference was noted between HMPV infected children and RSV infected children regarding to the age and sex (P=0.086 and P=0.47). The majority of the infections caused by HMPV (69.7%) children presented with lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI). Comparative analysis of the clinical presentation of HMPV and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infected children revealed no significant differences between those two groups, although pneumonia tended to be more frequent in HMPV infected children. None of the HMPV alone or co-infected patients in this study required the mechanical respiratory support. Only 3 of 30 (10%) patients infected with HMPV alone received supplemental oxygen, as well as two individuals (2/3 ; 66.6%) co-infected with parainfluenza virus type 3 and adenovirus respectively. All patients infected with HMPV genotype A had clinical presentation of LRTI, while 36% (9/25) of those infected with genotype B had upper respiratory tract infection (URTI). All strains detected from patients infected with HMPV alone who required supplemental oxygen belonged to the genotype B2, while two HMPV strains from patients with co-infection who received supplemental oxygen belonged to the genotype B1.
