Sažetak
Functional capacity of an old person means her/his ability to perform the activities of daily living independently and regardless of the chronological age. It is critically important to ensure as independent and qualitative way of living as possible to the elderly individual even in very old age. The functional capacity in relation to physical mobility and mental independence of an elderly person is determined by different experts involved in providing health care to the elderly people: gerontological centres, family physicians, geriatric and psycho-geriatric institutions. Furthermore, the determination of physical mobility of the remaining functional capacity of the disabled individuals has been carried out as part of 2001 Croatian census activities. The proportion of the disabled in total Croatian population ranges up to 9.68%, or 429421 individuals, (N=4437460). The male physically disabled population in relation to the total number of male population is greater than the Croatian average and it pariticipates with 11.51%, or 245897 individuals (N=2135900). However, in Croatian female population, which is greater than the male one (N=2301560), the physically disabled women participate in smaller proportion, i.e. with 7.97%, or 183524 females. Gerontological analysis of functional disability in Croatian regions shows the highest proportion of physically disabled persons in Krapina and Zagorje Region, i.e. 13.02% of the total population in the region (N=142432), which is significantly higher than the Croatian average of 9.68 %. The smallest number of functionally disabled individuals has been reported for Istria Region, i.e. 7.27 % (N=306344).The determination of criteria of functional capacity of the elderly population in relation to their health status is the most significant indicator to implementation of geriatric care and social welfare institutional and non-institutional forms of care for the elderly.
