Sažetak
Physical eduaction (PE) and sport are integral components of education system in the Republic of Croatia implemented throughout preschool, elementary and secondary school, as well as at the institutions of higher or further education. Recent reserch studies (Findak, 1999) on physical activity of the population of Croatian elementary school fourth and eighth graders demonstrate that our pupils spend 4 to 6 hours daily sitting in school and 1 to 3 hours sitting in frotn of TV-sets. By the Order of the Croatian Ministry of Education and Sport, the foundation of school sport clubs started in 1993. As stated in information of the Croatian Ministry of Education and Sport, about 25% of elementary school children are involved in training and competition systems of school sport. The present sistem of elementary schooling in Croatia does not provide enough opportunities for children and the young to be engaged in physical exercise and sport to the extent and level corresponding to their porential and needs.
