Sažetak
Anxiety is a physiological state characterized by cognitive, somatic, emotional, and behavioral components (Seligman, Walker & Rosenhan, 2001). These components combine to create the feelings that we typically recognize as fear or worry and which are usually accompanied by physical sensations such as heart palpitations, nausea, chest pain, shortness of breath, stomach aches, or headache. Because of described characteristics, anxiety symptoms can provoke difficulties in everyday life even when they are present at lower, sub clinical level. The aim of our study was to investigate the relationship between life satisfaction and anxiety. In this research, 334 high school students aged 14 to 20 years and their parents, completed two questionnaires: Alpha Anxiety Scale (Momirović et al., 1982) and Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) which is a measure of life satisfaction developed by Ed Diener and colleagues (1985). Results showed similar pattern of correlations among all three samples (children, mothers and fathers). Generally, there is a low to moderate negative relationship between five SWLS items and anxiety. As expected, highest negative correlation with anxiety was obtained for the item measuring a broad aspect of life satisfaction (“ I am satisfied with my life.” ). Further analysis indicated that correlations between life satisfaction items and anxiety are something higher in student sample. The results are discussed in the light of a conceptual model of subjective well-being.
