Sažetak
Tourism is an economic activity that can have a truly major impact on sustainable economic development. Sustainable economic development requires the safeguarding the earth’ s capacity to support life in all its diversity. Sustainable economic development is an overarching objective of the European Union. During the last few years there have been considerable increases in consumer awareness of the impacts of holidaymaking on a sustainable tourism development. Nature and culture based tourism market segmentations have been strongly growing. For all these reasons we recognise a wide opportunity for sustainable economic and tourism development on a karstic landscape of Istria. While those areas are economically relatively underdeveloped, they are rich with natural and cultural resources as potential tourist attractions. Also those areas are border areas along the Slovenian – Croatian borderline. On the basis of the collected evidence on demographic characteristics of this territories and tourist attractions we have analyzed possibilities for sustainable tourism development on the karstic landscape of Istria. We have reviewed previous literature and studies on sustainable tourism development in a modern Europe. In particular, we have compared our results of research conducted in Croatian and Slovenian parts of the karstic landscape of Istria. These empirical results are based on the collected data using written questionnaires for surveys with tourists in urban and in developed coastal tourist places of Istria. The aimof the research was to find out if tourists in developed coastal tourist centres of Istria are interested in spending their holidays on the karstic landscape of Istria.
