Sažetak
Leisure, landscapes and scenery, cultural heritage and recreation are only a few of the basic motivations for tourism. Health tourism is a young branch of the tourism offering. It is engaged in improving the health of tourists, provides help through therapy and focuses on promoting health and the importance of preventative medicine. As a form of health protection for tourists, health tourism provides treatment and therapy in specialised institutions and enables tourists to enjoy the health-related benefits and favourable characteristics of a Mediterranean climate. Istria’ s rural region is characterised by a Mediterranean climate with exceptionally long, dry summers and mild winters. Not far away, the sea air is rich in iodine and the essential aromas of Mediterranean plants and pine forests growing along the coast. The influence of cooler air, as it mixes with the sea air, is felt in the highland and central regions of Istria. The hectic pace of life and stressful lifestyles of modern people have led to a worldwide increase in the demand for tourism offerings that successfully combine leisure and therapy. The health-tourism offering is based on natural medicinal factors that connect various forms of preventative, therapeutic, rehabilitation and wellness programs geared to the needs of specific tourist groups. The main potential and resources for the future development of health tourism in rural Istria can be found in the region’ s diverse natural heritage, medicinal waters, beneficial climate, organic food products, and, in particular, in the high quality of its environment. Important also are the comparative advantages of the wellness offering, the further development of which should be based on the richness of natural heritage, indigenous oils, extracts of indigenous medicinal herbs, the properties of medicinal waters, in combination with healthy, indigenous traditional food and unique flavouring.
