Sažetak
Starting from the fact that tourism is in Croatia one of the strategic economic activities with numerous comparative and competitive advantages, the basic indicators of the development of Croatian tourism that are the consequence of a particular tourism policy are presented in this paper. Tourism policy, as a part of economic policy, directly affects the development of tourism, and tourism confirms the efficiency of measures and instruments of a certain tourism policy through numerous activities and their economic effects. In this paper the basic indicators of the development of Croatian tourism are analysed and the existing situation, together with the existing advantages and weaknesses, regarding the development of Croatian tourism is presented. Additionally, particular measures and instruments of tourism policy for the sustainable development of tourism are emphasized. It is estimated that the accession of Croatia to the European Union will positively affect the development of tourism. However, this will ultimately result in the need to search for new guidelines of the tourism policy especially in the area of both real estate and tourist facilities ownership, and of the new investments as important elements of the sustainable development of tourism. The basic hypothesis of this paper is that the existing tourism policy is neither clearly defined nor efficient in all areas and at all levels of tourism activities in Croatia. The consequences are manifested in the area of economic effects of tourism, and they directly affect the sustainable development of tourism. The goals of the new tourism policy should define: the measures for the improvement of competitiveness of Croatian tourism in the tourism market particularly of the European Union, the better utilisation of accommodation capacities, the strengthening of economic functions of tourism and the clear determinants of tourism policy in terms of the concept of sustainable development of Croatian tourism.
