Sažetak
The development of tourism whose main goal is to achieve as many tourist arrivals as possible is being questioned. “ Mass tourism development” resulted in a number of social, economic and environmental impacts. Therefore, the process of contemporary tourism development planning implies including the principles of sustainable tourism development in all tourism development plans. The topic of this paper refers to the problem of the sustainable tourism development in winter sports tourism. The great number of tourists and oversaturation with tourism capacities in tourism destinations generates numerous negative impacts. This is particularly true in winter sports tourism where consequences can already be seen. Ecological sensitivity of these areas as well as climate changes that affect the environment (in the broadest sense of the word) result in a smaller number of winter sports resorts. Since the future development of winter sports resorts is mostly influenced by climate changes, further increase in temperature reduces the number of days with adequate snow cover. Resorts at lower altitudes need to adapt their activities to this situation. Regardless of the adaptation strategy used, the future development of winter sports resorts needs to be planned and directed by sustainable development principles as the only acceptable development concept.
