Sažetak
The paper deals with the analysis of the glulam beam in the region of the pinned joint has been concentrated force is introduced over the steel base plate. This on-going research aims to closely investigate the tensile stresses perpendicular to the grain due to acting force parallel to the grain which may lead to splitting of the beam. Parametric study was performed using the 2D and 3D FEM models, by varying the height of the beam and the size of the steel plate. Correlations between the geometry of the beam and the stress distribution has been established and the method for estimation of the maximum tensile stress perpendicular to the grain has been proposed. The analysis has been performed for 3D and 2D models. 8-node hexahedron elements were used for 3D models, while 4-node quadrilateral elements were used for the 2D analysis. The size of the finite elements was equal throughout all the models. The results presented in this paper are based on 2D model since the differences were insignificant. In this study, the intensity of the tensile stresses perpendicular to the grain reaches 30 - 42% of the tensile strenght of the wood perpendicular to the grain. These stresses can not endanger the bearing capacity of the glulam beam (even in the theoretical cases where the height od the base plate has been only 4 cm). However, if the applied force acts at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the beam one should add the effect of the force component perpendicular to the grain to the existing tensile stresses, which may lead to exceeding the tensile strenght of the material.
