Sažetak
The paper recounts the story of the symbols of the city of Rijeka since the anexation of the Rijeka Free State to Italy in 1924, the formation of the Provincia del Carnaro, and the 1929 grant of its symbols (coat of arms, gonfalon). These symbols were abolished with the fall of the Fascist Italy, and the entirely new symbols were adopted only in 1967. The new emblem in form of modernized coat of arms was accompanied by an unusually long light blue flag with stylized depiction of the Rječina delta. The use of that flag, but not of the emblem that remains popular, ended in early 1990's. The diescussion on the new official symbols that were to be the same as the hsitorical symbols went for years, since the same historical symbols were in use by the irridentisti esuli organizations in Italy, and was finally settled in 1998 with the adoption of a light blue with with sightly modified historical coat of arms from 1659 - from which is omitted the motto "Indeficienter" and the imperial Austrian crown.
