Sažetak
B-ISDN networks currently use optical transmission and electronic switching, but the speed of electronic switching networks will be limited to the lower Gb/s range (approximately 10 Gb/s) and higher speeds will require optical switching networks. However, the B-ISDN network uses asynchronous time division multiplexing (ATM) and information is transported in cells. This requires the cell header to be processed in each switching element so that it can be forwarded to its proper destination output. Cell header processing requires extensive logic manipulations and without greater development in optical computing and optical memories it must be done electronically. In this paper components for all-optical network are presented as well as possible scenario for ATM optical switching structure with 840 Gb/s throughput.
