Sažetak
Attaining an increasingly higher level of various forms of literacy is a prominent feature of a knowledge society we aspire towards. Nowadays the term “ literacy” does not only refer to basic literacy which implies the ability to read, speak, listen, count, calculate etc., but also implies other aspects of literacy, such as technological, media and library literacy. In the existing literature the importance of new technologies and the usage of the computer as an aid to achieving basic literacy are emphasized. The knowledge of English as a tool facilitating the usage of information technology is essential in that respect as well. In this paper the results of evaluating technological, i.e., computer literacy at the early elementary school age based on children’ s familiarity with hardware and software are presented, complemented by the evaluation of the basic level of library literacy based on elementary library skills including library orientation and usage of books and magazines. The findings of the research have confirmed the correlation between the variables computer literacy and library literacy. The level of computer and library literacy at the early elementary school age obtained in the research is related to children's achievement as expressed by means of school grades. The hypothesis that school achievement is additionally influenced by the level of development of certain basic school skills such as language skills, graphomotor and oculomotor coordination skills has been confirmed as well.
