Sažetak
The very centre of a town is a part with a high level of urban aesthetics as well as a valuable environment in both a social and architectural sense. Usually, the beauty in the centre of town (which is typically the historic core of the town) is institutionally preserved. In other words, such a place has a special status in the town. This often entails special maintenance treatment in which urban policy and planners make an effort to revitalize and rehabilitate the historic area in the city as well as to preserve ” the beautiful” . On the other side, this is also a residential zone of the city and the role of the local community is inevitable: their attitudes, aspirations, symbolic meaning, etc. Since these circumstances in which the historic city core represents both the architectural heritage and the social identity of the city, the preservation of “ the beautiful” depends on social actors more: art historians, architects, urban planners, local residents and citizens. Many towns in Croatia have retained their historic core so there is a rich tradition of sociological research in this field with a general aim to revitalize these parts of cities. Varaždin is a small town (41, 434 inhabitants) with the best preserved baroque urban core in the inland part of Croatia. Its historic core has a great ambient value and numerous historical monuments as well. In this paper, two processes are emphasised: (1) the process of the preservation of “ the beautiful” and (2) the process of the “ beautification” of the historic city core. The hypothesis is that the process of the beautification is an unavoidable part of the process of the preservation of “ the beautiful” . The aim of this paper is to understand the meaning of the “ beautiful” in the city for different social actors (planners, residents, curators, etc.) in the town of Varaždin through an analysis of various forms of both preservation and “ beautification” . Thus, the paper is mainly based on a content analysis of planners’ documentation and interviews with various interested actors as well.
