Sažetak
During the work on the biochemical standardisation of Istrian hound, a croatian breed of gundogs (sporting dogs), an enormously high concentration of uric acid was found in blood serum. In comparison with the values of uric acid concentration in the blood of Dalmatian dogs, as presented in scientific literature, a great analogy in the metabolism of purines of these two breeds was noted. Since both breeds have their origins in the same area (Croatia, Dalmatian coast of Adriatic sea with its hinterland), the hypothesis about their relationship, or better to say, their common origin seems plausible. That is also being pointed out by the common genetic formula for colour shared by these two breeds. The research has been conducted on 100 pure bred Istrian hounds, of both sexes and different ages, the data have been statistically analyzed. For the analyses of blood serum a colourenzymatic method was used. The concentration of uric acid was 54.62 (+/- 36.07) mmol/l. The results of this research are inconsistent with literature about the exclusive nature of the Dalmatian dog, regarding the metabolism of purines in comparison to other breeds. The results also support the belief about the existence of a special genom, which has its origin in the recently discovered population of hounds in the mentioned area, who are investigated just now.
