Sažetak
AIM: Cytological analysis of induced sputum is valuable diagnostic tool in asthma. The aim is to find out the advantages of induced sputum (IS) in relation with spontaneous one and to see the possibilities of using IS instead of BAL. METHODS: We analyzed 14 IS in patents that had no other disease, taking no medicine and to whom the diagnosis of asthma has been established in the moment of our study. The patients inhaled aerosoles usually producing satisfactory sputum. We measured the weight of sputum, treated it with sputolysin to get cell suspension. After removing supernatant we added HSA with PBS and prepared cytospins. The slides were stained with Papenheim and Papanicolaou staining. RESULTS: We analyzed 28 cytospins of IS and 28 smears of spontaneous sputum from 14 patients. The IS was analyzed qualitative and quantitative. We performed differential cell counts by counting 500 cells in each cytospin and expressed the number of lower airway cells in percentage. Comparison of epithelial and non-epithelial cells showed in average 27, 3% of squamous cells, 24% neutrohpil granulocytes, 23% alveolar macrophages and 18% eosinophil granulocytes. The spontaneous sputum was analyzed qualitative showing mucus and non-cell elements that were not found in IS. CONCLUSION: Cytological analysis of induced sputum is non-invasive and quick method which can replaced BAL in asthma.
