Sažetak
Fruit (F) and vegetables (V) play a significant role in human nutrition, especially as sources of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber. Intake of F and V in most of the countries is usually insufficient though it is known that their regular intake has been strongly associated with reduced risk of some chronic diseases. The aim of this study was to determine consumption and attitudes towards different F and V in Croatian student and working population by short questionnaire. Research was conducted on area of City Osijek and Baranja County. Questionnaires were completed by 161 participants, 71 students (age 18-25) and 90 working adults (age 20-65). Both men and women have the same choice for F and V. Apple is the most consumed of all F, and is also considered the healthiest. Tomatoes are the most consumed V by women and potatoes by men. While 98, 76% participants eat fresh F, V are mostly consumed in cans or as frozen, and the least as fresh. Taking personal opinion, the healthiest F beside apple are orange, lemon, kiwi and bananas, respectively, while healthiest V are carrot, potato, tomato, onion and peas. We found that no matter on incomes per capita or years of education price was the most important reason for the selection. Also the social and sensory aspects of F and V were very important and related to their intake. In conclusion, consumption patterns of F and V in studied populations are very similar regardless of age, sex, BMI status, age of education or incomes per capita.
