Sažetak
The Croatian language and the Macedonian language belong to the South Slavic languages with relatively small number of speakers. Even though both are state and official language, there are other official and/or minority languages that are spoken within Macedonia and Croatia. Two countries share some groups of the minority speakers, ex. speakers of Albanian, Roma and Serbian language, while having minority language groups that are not in common: ex. Turkish in Macedonia or Hungarian in Croatia. In both countries minorities have right to be educated in their first language at all levels. This paper deals with primary education in language other than the state language in Croatia and Macedonia, with the emphasis on the education of Roma and Albanian L1 speakers in both countries. The curriculum of the state languages (Croatian and Macedonian) in primary schools will be discusses in more details. It will be investigated whether the state language curriculum fits the students’ needs and what are the actual learning outcomes. Significant changes in language curriculum and teaching approaches will be proposed.
