Sažetak
The association Caricetum rostratae was not known in Croatia until 2005. At this time, it was established in several localities in the Plitvice Lakes National Park. Field research was carried out using the standard Braun-Blanquet methodology. The association is characterized by its diagnostic and/or dominant species, Carex rostrata, and by poor floristic composition. It develops along the edges of streams and lakes. The water depth in the habitat is about 10-20 cm, and it very rarely dries up during the summer months. The soil is poor in nutrients. The community usually develops over small areas. Syntaxonomically, the association Caricetum rostratae is assigned to the Magnocaricion elatae alliance, to the Phragmitetalia order and to the Phragmito-Magnocaricetea class. However, due to the community’ s connection with pronounced oligotrophic habitats, some authors (Steiner 1993) categorise this community as fen vegetation of the class Scheuchzerio-Caricetea fuscae. The main distribution area of the association Caricetum rostratae is in mountainous and subalpine regions of Central Europe (Philippi 1998). It should be stressed that marshland vegetation of mountainous regions in Croatia is very rare, and there are especially few oligotrophic marshland habitats. Besides that, the species Carex rostrata is listed in the Red Book of vascular flora of Croatia (Nikolić & Topić 2005) as vulnerable. Therefore, the association Caricetum rostratae could be considered as threatened. For the preservation of this kind of vegetation, it is necessary to maintain the aquatic regime in habitats, and the oligotrophic conditions, and prevent the overgrowth of association surfaces with woody species.
